Benidorm Bans Tourist Mobility Scooter Rentals Citing Road Safety

Benidorm has introduced a new ban prohibiting tourists from hiring mobility scooters in the Spanish coastal city. Local authorities say the measure aims to improve road safety amid growing concerns about accidents and congestion involving the vehicles.

The restriction targets rental services that cater primarily to visitors, while residents with documented mobility needs remain exempt. Officials argue that the high volume of tourist-operated scooters has created hazards on sidewalks and streets, particularly in the busy resort areas.

Business owners and tourism operators have criticized the move, warning it could deter visitors with limited mobility and harm the local economy. Some disability advocates also say the ban fails to distinguish between reckless use and legitimate accessibility needs.

The city council has not specified an end date for the prohibition, stating it will assess the impact on safety and tourism before considering any adjustments.
