Employees may soon gain a legal right to learn what their colleagues earn, as momentum builds for greater pay transparency in the workplace. The shift reflects growing pressure to address wage gaps and ensure fair compensation practices.
Legislative efforts in several jurisdictions are moving to require employers to disclose salary ranges or allow workers to request pay information for comparable roles. Advocates argue that secrecy around pay perpetuates inequality, while opponents cite privacy concerns and administrative burdens.
If such measures become widespread, the long-standing taboo around discussing salaries could fade, giving workers more leverage in negotiations and helping to close gender and racial pay disparities.
