S4 Capital Shares Plunge 20% as Marketing Budgets Shift to AI

By Karim Hammam

Shares in S4 Capital dropped around 20% on Wednesday after the advertising company warned that clients are cutting marketing budgets in favor of artificial intelligence investments.

Revenue Decline in Third Quarter

The firm, led by WPP founder Sir Martin Sorrell, said third-quarter revenue fell 10% year-on-year to £173.5 million, reflecting challenging market conditions.

Client Spending Shifts to AI

S4 said technology clients, particularly large hyperscalers investing heavily in data centers, continue to prioritize AI infrastructure spending over marketing. Sir Martin Sorrell noted clients remain cautious amid macroeconomic uncertainty, including conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Outlook and Debt Position

Despite the downturn, Sorrell highlighted growing opportunities as clients focus on implementing AI, blockchain, and quantum computing to drive efficiency. He cited projections that the four largest hyperscalers will spend over $5 trillion on AI-related capital expenditure between 2025 and 2030.

The company expects full-year revenue to be marginally below previous guidance, down by high single digits compared to last year. However, net debt decreased to £76 million at quarter-end, roughly half the £151 million reported a year earlier.
