Half of Americans are skipping meals because of soaring grocery prices, according to a survey conducted in August by financial firm Self Financial. The poll of about 1,000 people found that rising food costs are affecting mental health and stress levels more than other factors such as physical activity, diet, and sleep.

Food Prices Rise Sharply Since 2020

Federal data shows grocery prices have increased 28 percent from September 2020 to September 2026. Specific items have seen even steeper increases: ground beef prices have risen 67 percent, while coffee prices have soared 108 percent over the same period.

Broader Economic Pressure

The affordability crisis extends beyond food. Average gas prices have reached $4 or higher for more days in 2026 than in any previous year, according to GasBuddy. New federal data also indicates that the average cost of unleaded gasoline is higher during President Donald Trump's second term than under his predecessor, Joe Biden.

Political Implications Ahead of Midterms

Voter dissatisfaction with the cost of living poses a challenge for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections. A New York Times and Siena University survey found 69 percent of voters disapprove of the cost of living under Trump, and 73 percent disapprove of his handling of gas prices. Siena Research Institute Executive Director Don Levy said voters see Democrats as more trusted to handle the economy, cost of living, gas prices, health care, and other key issues by margins of eight to twenty points.

Households Living Paycheck to Paycheck

A September study by Goldman Sachs revealed that just over 60 percent of households earning $50,000 or less are living paycheck to paycheck, driven by the increased cost of essentials like groceries and gas over the past year.
