Ranulph Fiennes Wife Allows Visits After Two-Year Isolation

By Islam El-Sakka

Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the renowned British explorer, has received his first visitors in two years after his wife Louise Millington-Cotes permitted selected friends and family to see him at a specialist dementia unit in Shropshire.

Concerns Over Wellbeing and Legal Challenge

Friends and family had raised concerns after the 82-year-old adventurer had not been seen publicly for two years. His wife, who holds power of attorney, reportedly moved him between care homes under assumed names and required visitors to sign non-disclosure agreements. Following media attention, relatives called for investigations by police and the Office of the Public Guardian, and are pursuing a Court of Protection hearing to determine whether she is exercising her authority appropriately.

King Charles Blocked from Contact

The King, a longtime friend of Sir Ranulph, was reportedly prevented from checking on the explorer's wellbeing after fellow explorer Anton Bowring alerted him to concerns in February 2025. Buckingham Palace's attempts to reach Sir Ranulph, his wife, and their daughter were allegedly rebuffed, with Mrs Millington-Cotes sending angry messages to Mr Bowring after her contact details were shared.

Stepson Seeks Court of Protection Hearing

Sir Ranulph's stepson, Alex Millington-Cotes, who is estranged from his mother, said the recent visitations do not resolve his concerns. He stated that his mother retains control over visitation rights and could revoke them at any time. The legal challenge aims to remove her power of attorney while minimizing harm to Sir Ranulph, he told The Telegraph. Those who have visited report the explorer is well cared for and has a dedicated carer.
