Olivia Chow Wins Second Term as Toronto Mayor

By Islam El-Sakka

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow secured a second term on October 26, winning 54% of the vote against rival Brad Bradford's 41% in an election marked by record turnout.

Decisive Victory Amid Affordability Crisis

The 13-percentage-point margin exceeded pre-election polls that had suggested a dead heat. Chow campaigned on addressing the affordability crisis with promises of more rental housing, free school lunches, and reduced transit fares for frequent riders.

Chow's Political Career

Chow, 69, has served as a school board trustee, city councillor, and federal MP. Her vote total of over 532,000 nearly doubled her 2023 tally.

Bradford's Challenge and Concession

Bradford, 40, a former city councillor and urban planner, focused on rising living costs and crime, though most crime categories except auto theft have fallen. He conceded graciously, urging support for Chow's success.

Progressive Gains on Council

The incoming council includes a larger progressive bloc, notably Diana McNally Chan, a housing advocate who will be the first renter on council.

Relationship with Ontario Premier

Chow's ability to manage relations with Premier Doug Ford, who once called her a "disaster" but later described a "phenomenal relationship," may shape future battles over bike lanes and city funding.
