DC Studios secured a victory this weekend with the release of "Clayface," which earned a $24 million opening. The R-rated film, which blends body horror with comic book elements, narrowly took the top spot at the domestic box office.
Documentary Sensation Breaks Records
A24's documentary "You Can See Everything," centered on Elizabeth Holmes and directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, remains a major success. The film earned $19.5 million during its wide release weekend, bringing its two-week total to $45.1 million. The documentary has become a cultural phenomenon, particularly among Gen Z audiences, and is generating significant Oscar buzz.
DC Studios Finds Stability
Produced on a modest $44 million budget, "Clayface" also earned $19 million internationally. This performance provides stability for DC Studios under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, following the commercial disappointment of "Supergirl." The film, starring Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, received a high CinemaScore of "A-" from audiences.
Other Notable Film Performances
Laika's stop-motion animated film "Wildwood," directed by Travis Knight, debuted in third place with $11.8 million. While it saw a strong opening compared to the studio's previous works, the film faces challenges in reaching profitability due to its $100 million production cost. Meanwhile, the comic fable "Wicker," starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård, earned $5.8 million in its launch weekend.
In contrast, the video game adaptation "Street Fighter" saw a significant decline, dropping 72% in its second weekend to earn $8.6 million. Other recent releases, including Taika Waititi's "Klara and the Sun" and Sacha Baron Cohen's "Ali G: Who Iz I?", struggled at the box office.
