UK Saturday Papers Lead on Markle Arrest, Brand Conviction

By Basant El-Faramawy

British Saturday newspapers lead with the arrest of Thomas Markle, the Duchess of Sussex's father, on child sexual abuse material charges, and the conviction of entertainer Russell Brand on rape and sexual assault counts.

Thomas Markle appears in court

The 82-year-old appeared in a US court on Friday charged with one count of possessing indecent images of children, according to the Department of Justice. The charges follow an FBI search of two Los Angeles storage units he rented for nearly two decades. Markle has previously denied the allegations. His daughter Meghan has not commented.

Russell Brand conviction sparks further investigations

Brand's conviction features across multiple front pages. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley told the BBC there are two ongoing rape investigations into the entertainer and said he would not be surprised if more allegations emerge. The Guardian reports unnamed sources fear Brand is suspected of attacks on at least ten more women. The Times highlights calls to reform sexual offence prosecutions, with Mayor Andy Burnham stating rape survivors should not feel "like they are on trial." The Daily Star notes Brand spent his first night in solitary confinement.
