Ninety-year-old Holocaust survivor Eva Geller died Thursday night in a Sydney hospital, nearly a year after she was wounded in a mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach, officials confirmed Friday.

Attack details

On Dec. 14, 2025, two gunmen allegedly inspired by the Islamic State group opened fire on a crowd of about 40 people, killing 15 victims aged 10 to 87 and wounding around 40 others. One gunman, Sajid Akram, was shot dead by police at the scene. The surviving alleged gunman, Naveed Akram, 25, has been charged with 15 counts of murder, 43 counts of attempted murder and one count of committing a terrorist act.

Survivor's resilience

Rabbi Aron Moss, speaking on behalf of Geller's family, said she had been “strong and pretty healthy” before the attack. Despite being told she would never walk again, Geller regained her ability to walk with a cane through determination. She had been hospitalized several times in recent weeks due to surgery complications.

Legal proceedings

Naveed Akram has not yet entered a plea. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 24, when prosecutors expect to finalize charges for trial in the New South Wales Supreme Court. Police said they are awaiting advice from the state coroner on whether Geller’s death will alter the charges.

Official condolences

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns called Geller’s death “heartbreaking” and said the community continues to live with the pain of the attack. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the devastation continues to cause pain for families, emphasizing that Geller should have been able to celebrate Hanukkah in peace and safety.
