A 90-year-old Holocaust survivor who was critically wounded in the Bondi Beach mass shooting has died in a Sydney hospital, nearly a year after the attack.
Victim identified as Eva Geller
Eva Geller was among dozens injured when two gunmen opened fire on a crowd celebrating a Jewish holiday at Bondi Beach on 14 December 2025. She had been in and out of hospital since the shooting, according to public broadcaster ABC. Rabbi Aron Moss of the Nefesh Synagogue described Geller as “positive, loving, and strong throughout her life, right until the end.”
Attack details and perpetrators
The shooting killed 15 people, making it Australia’s deadliest mass shooting in almost three decades. Police allege the gunmen, Sajid Akram and his son Naveed Akram, were inspired by Islamic State. Sajid Akram was shot dead at the scene, while Naveed Akram survived and faces 15 counts of murder and a terror offence.
Government response and inquiry
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed sadness over Geller’s death, saying the devastation continues to cause pain for families. A government-backed inquiry into antisemitism prompted by the attack is due to deliver its findings on 18 December.
New security measures
In response to the massacre, New South Wales has deployed the Armed Response Command, with heavily armed officers patrolling tourist hotspots, crowded public spaces, sporting venues, major events and places of worship.
