Russell Brand has been found guilty of raping a fan and sexually assaulting three women over a five-year period at the height of his career, a London jury decided Thursday after a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court. The 51-year-old comedian was cleared of two further rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Further investigations and police appeal
The Metropolitan Police revealed that Brand is now under investigation for two additional rape allegations, with files submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service. Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, the strategic lead for Operation Actinolite, described Brand as a predator whose offending escalated as his fame grew. Furphy urged any other potential victims to come forward, saying the investigation remains active.
Operation Actinolite and court details
The police operation involved more than 100 witnesses, 1,400 documents, and 340 statements from former employers, colleagues, and associates. Furphy praised the courage of the women who testified, noting the cross-examination was deeply uncomfortable. He also said Brand’s extensive media commentary during the trial had taken a toll on the victims.
Civil claims in Britain and the United States
Brand faces civil proceedings in London over an alleged 2008 assault at his Los Angeles mansion, with the claimant seeking up to £100,000 in damages. A separate U.S. lawsuit filed in 2023 accuses him of sexual assault during the filming of the movie Arthur in 2010. Brand denies all civil allegations. None of the criminal trial complainants have pursued compensation claims.
