Russell Brand Found Guilty of Rape and Sexual Assault

By Fatma Younis

Russell Brand has been found guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault following a four-week trial at Southwark Crown Court.

Verdict and Charges

The 51-year-old former Hollywood actor and podcaster was convicted of offences dating back to his early career as a rising British comedian. He was acquitted of two further rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. The jury’s verdict means Brand faces a lengthy prison sentence, with sentencing to follow.

Further Investigations

After the verdict, the Metropolitan Police disclosed that Brand is also under investigation for two additional alleged rapes, including an allegation involving a 16-year-old schoolgirl. The force warned that more victims could come forward. Police also released footage of interviews conducted with Brand in November 2023 and July 2024, after the initial allegations surfaced.

Court Proceedings and Images

The trial featured dramatic court arrivals, with Brand often wearing flamboyant clothing alongside his wife, Laura Gallacher. Court artist sketches depicted him in the dock during jury selection, listening to witness evidence behind a privacy screen, and being cross-examined by prosecuting barrister Riel Karmy-Jones KC. Photographs captured the moment the guilty verdict was read by Judge Mr Justice Bennathan, and Gallacher’s reaction in the gallery.
