Comedian and media personality Russell Brand has been convicted of four counts of rape and sexual assault against four women following a trial at Southwark Crown Court in London. The jury of eight men and four women deliberated for less than nine hours before delivering the verdict on Thursday.
Verdict and Sentencing
Brand, 51, was found guilty of anally raping one woman and sexually assaulting three others during his rise to fame between 1999 and 2009. He was acquitted of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault. The judge remanded him in custody ahead of sentencing on Monday, warning he faces a significant custodial term.
Trial Proceedings
The four-week trial attracted global media attention, with Brand appearing in court alongside his wife, Laura Brand, who was the only defense witness to testify live. She described him as a devoted husband and father but the judge barred her from offering an opinion on the allegations. Brand remained largely impassive throughout the proceedings, often sitting upright with prayer beads, while his social media activity ceased mid-trial.
Defense and Prosecution
Brand’s legal team argued that a 2023 documentary and newspaper investigation had prejudiced the case, claiming he faced trial as a “convicted-in-the-media rapist.” The judge rejected this, noting Brand had actively publicized his own version of events. Prosecutors portrayed a pattern of predatory behavior, with victims describing a sudden shift from charm to aggression.
Additional Investigations
Police are investigating Brand over alleged rapes involving two more women, and a separate civil lawsuit in the United States accuses him of sexual assault on a movie set in 2010. Detectives believe the conviction may encourage further victims to come forward.
