The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged about 1,200 points on Thursday, erasing most of the previous day's rally that had been driven by midterm election results. The index fell 1,220 points, or 2.2%, while the S&P 500 dropped 3.2% and the Nasdaq composite slid 4.8%.

Market reaction to election outcomes

Wednesday's session had marked the Dow's best trading day in more than a year as investors digested the midterm results. Thursday's selloff reversed much of those gains, reflecting renewed uncertainty about the economic outlook.
