World number five Jessica Pegula described Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva as "a diva" during a live-streamed practice session at Indian Wells, California, ahead of the WTA Finals. The comments were picked up by a courtside microphone while Pegula spoke privately with her coach, Mark Knowles.
Critical remarks caught on microphone
Pegula, 32, said Andreeva "needs to be humbled" and suggested her coach, Conchita Martinez, encourages the behavior. Knowles added that Andreeva "treats Conchita so bad." The French Open champion, ranked third in the world, won every game during the session, according to the audio.
Pegula also praised Andreeva's talent, calling her "wonderful," "smart," and noting she "moves like a cat." She compared the 19-year-old to Coco Gauff, saying Andreeva would be even better with Gauff's mentality.
WTA removes streams, footage circulates
The Women's Tennis Association removed YouTube streams of the practice sessions, but clips have been shared on social media. Pegula serves on the WTA players' council. Her representative and the WTA have been approached for comment.
Separate incident involves Rybakina
In another live-streamed session, world number one Elena Rybakina appeared to have a heated exchange with her coach, Stefano Vukov, before practicing with Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova. Vukov was suspended by the WTA in February 2025 following an investigation into his conduct toward Rybakina, but returned to her team in August.
The season-ending WTA Finals, held at Indian Wells for the first time, begin Sunday and run until November 15. Pegula and Andreeva are in different groups but could meet in the semi-finals or final.
