Spending on tickets for the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum has significantly outpaced the opening mornings of major Hollywood blockbusters. Data from Monzo reveals a massive surge in consumer spending during the release of the second tranche of public tickets for the historic exhibit.
Surge in Cultural Spending
When tickets went on sale at 10 a.m. last Wednesday, thousands of people joined online queues, drawing comparisons to major events like the Glastonbury Festival and the Oasis reunion tour. Monzo's data, covering its 16 million customers, showed that payments to the museum were 48 times higher than a typical Wednesday morning.
In the first hour of sales alone, cardholders spent £14,100 on exhibition tickets. This figure is double the opening morning spending for major films such as The Odyssey, which saw £7,000, and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which saw £6,300. Additionally, the average amount spent per buyer at the checkout was £97, five times higher than the £19 average seen during the Spider-Man opening.
Youth and Regional Interest
Within two hours of the sale starting, Monzo customers had spent a total of £30,500 on tickets. This represents a 60% increase over the combined average Saturday night spending between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. across six major UK nightlife venues, including Koko, Fabric, and the Roundhouse.
The 1,000-year-old embroidery, which records the Norman Conquest, has seen an extraordinary response since returning to the UK. Monzo's data suggests this interest is driven largely by younger demographics, with 55% of buyers under the age of 35. Furthermore, nearly half of all purchasers were located outside of London, with some orders originating hundreds of miles away in areas such as Glasgow.
