A security officer was killed and another injured in a terrorist attack near the Sri Lankan Embassy in Amman, Jordan, on Thursday, authorities said.
Attack details
The assailant, armed with a sharp object, attacked the officer and attempted to seize his weapon, according to Jordan's Public Security Directorate. A second officer intervened, and both the attacker and the second officer sustained injuries. The assailant was arrested.
Official response
The directorate described the incident as a "cowardly terrorist attack" and said a preliminary investigation indicated the attacker had planned to target General Security Directorate officers. The Sri Lankan Embassy confirmed the attack occurred in its vicinity. Government spokesperson Mohamed al-Momani said the prime minister was closely monitoring the security response, calling attacks on security personnel an "assault on the dignity of the state." The attack follows a church shooting in southern Jordan weeks earlier that killed nine people.
