Cristiano Ronaldo has retired from international football, ending a 23-year career with Portugal as the all-time leading scorer in men's international football.
Record-breaking career
The 41-year-old forward announced his decision in a social media video, saying he would hand back the number 7 shirt. He reflected on his journey since his debut in August 2003, scoring 146 goals in 234 appearances.
Controversial exit
The retirement comes after a controversial exit from the Portugal camp last month, where Ronaldo accused new manager Jorge Jesus of breaking his word twice after being an unused substitute against Norway. The Portuguese Football Federation imposed a 30-day suspension and a €255 fine, though Jesus had not ruled out a recall.
Ronaldo's decision to step away permanently follows a month after rival Lionel Messi played his final game for Argentina.
