Rising costs and economic pressures are increasingly influencing romantic pursuits, with financial concerns taking precedence over traditional dating practices. According to research commissioned by Barclays, money is playing a significant role in how individuals date and develop relationships.
Impact on Younger Generations
The study reveals that 45% of individuals aged 18 to 29 feel that the rising cost of living has impacted their ability to go on new dates. Furthermore, 27% of Gen Z adults reported that they have cancelled, rearranged, or declined a date specifically due to money concerns.
Shifting Dating Preferences
To manage expenses, younger people are opting for more budget-friendly activities. Approximately 54% of the Gen Z demographic stated they would choose cheaper alternatives for meeting potential partners, such as going for a run or grabbing a coffee. This contrasts sharply with older demographics, where only 16% of people aged 46 and above expressed a preference for such low-cost options.
Broad Economic Influence
While the impact is most pronounced among younger adults, the trend is visible across all age groups, with 14% of all respondents reporting they have modified their dating plans due to cost concerns. The findings suggest that economic factors are fundamentally altering the social landscape of modern romance.
