Record Midterm Turnout Defies Trump Election Interference Threats

By Islam El-Sakka

More than 124 million Americans cast ballots in the 2026 midterm elections, marking the second-highest turnout rate for a midterm in modern U.S. history, according to preliminary results. The surge in participation came despite unprecedented efforts by the Trump administration to insert federal immigration agents into the electoral process.

Administration Threats and Legal Challenges

In the run-up to Election Day, President Donald Trump and top officials — including Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, Attorney General Todd Blanche, and former White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt — declined to rule out deploying Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to polling sites or invoking emergency powers to seize control of elections. The administration's refusal to dismiss those possibilities prompted lawsuits from civil rights groups and state officials seeking to prevent federal interference.

No Federal Interference Reported

On Election Day, ICE agents did not patrol polling places, the president did not invoke the Insurrection Act, and no ballots or voting machines were seized. The Department of Justice did deploy more than 900 agents from other federal law enforcement agencies to observe polls in all 50 states, but no major incidents were reported. California Governor Gavin Newsom responded by sending state election monitors to oversee the federal observers.

Election Officials and Civil Society Mobilize

A coalition of civil rights organizations, including the Save America Movement, the National Action Network, and the American Federation of Teachers, dispatched their own observers to battleground states. Election law expert Rick Hasen credited the "laborious work of thousands of lawyers, election administrators, and key parts of civil society" for neutralizing the threat of interference. Former Arizona elections official Stephen Richer summarized the outcome: "Any stolen election nonsense is gonna fall flat in the face of a blowout."

Post-Election Investigations Continue

Secretary Mullin stated he never ordered ICE to the polls but said his agency will continue scrutinizing voter data after the election to identify alleged noncitizen voters. The administration has launched a government-wide effort to investigate voter rolls, a campaign aligned with its aggressive anti-immigration agenda. Election security experts, including Pamela Smith of Verified Voting, said the smooth process demonstrates that institutional guardrails held, though they emphasized the need to complete post-election audits and certification accurately.
