Fenerbahce produced a stunning comeback to defeat Liverpool 3-2 in the Champions League at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium in Istanbul, inflicting a first European loss to the Turkish side on the English club.

Kuyt Inspires Historic Comeback

Interim manager Dirk Kuyt, a former Liverpool hero, urged his players to replicate the unity that defined the Reds' famous 2005 miracle in Istanbul. Fenerbahce twice erased Liverpool leads, with goals from Mason Greenwood, Archie Brown and Vedat Muriqi securing a famous victory.

Set-piece Woes Cost Liverpool

All three Fenerbahce goals originated from set-pieces. Greenwood's free-kick deflected in off Jeremy Jacquet, Brown tapped in after Cody Gakpo's header beat Alisson, and Muriqi headed home from a long throw after winning an aerial duel against three Liverpool defenders.

Liverpool's Defensive Frailties Exposed

Manager Andoni Iraola described the goals as "cheap" and "messy," citing communication difficulties in the deafening atmosphere. The defeat follows a loss to Arsenal four days earlier, raising concerns about Liverpool's ability to see out games.

Kuyt's Special Night

Kuyt, who wore the number 18 at Liverpool, called the win a personal milestone and said it showed Europe the true size of Fenerbahce. The 24-year-old Archie Brown contributed a goal and an assist on his Champions League debut, earning praise from Kuyt.
