The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 1,009 points, or 1.9%, at the opening of trading on Wednesday, hours after midterm election results projected Democrats would take control of both the U.S. House and Senate. The S&P 500 rose 1.1% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.1% in early trading.
Market reaction to election outcome
Investors responded to the projected "blue wave" that gave Democrats a 54-44 advantage in the Senate and a majority in the House. Key Senate races called for Democrats included Georgia, Ohio, Maine, and Texas, securing the party's legislative majority.
Developing story
Trading activity remained elevated as markets digested the political shift. The surge marked one of the largest single-day point gains for the Dow in recent months. Further updates are expected as vote counting continues in several states.
