Real Madrid are closing in on the signing of Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel, a move that would represent a significant loss for the Old Trafford academy. The 16-year-old forward informed United in September of his desire to leave, and his representatives have since engaged with several top European clubs, including Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

Personal terms agreed

Multiple reports indicate Gabriel has chosen Real Madrid and agreed personal terms, with a transfer expected to take place in January. Although club-to-club negotiations have not yet begun, United would be entitled to compensation for the departure of a homegrown player.

Development dispute

Gabriel has not trained at United’s Carrington base since falling out with the club hierarchy over his development pathway. His family were unhappy with his limited involvement in first-team activities during pre-season and his exclusion from Champions League matches this season. Manager Michael Carrick acknowledged the sensitivity of the situation, emphasizing the club’s duty to protect the welfare and exposure of young players.

Rising star

Born Joseph O’Cearuill, the London-born winger and attacking midfielder has been regarded as one of the world’s best young talents. He joined United’s youth system at age 11 after spells at Chelsea, Arsenal, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers. Gabriel first gained attention at age eight through a viral YouTube video that earned him the nickname “Kid Messi.” Last season he became the youngest winner of United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award after scoring more than 20 goals for the Under-18 side, and was named the Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season.
