Actor Nicolas Cage says he is living in hotels after a large sinkhole caused extensive damage to his $10.5 million oceanfront mansion in Malibu. The 62-year-old revealed his situation on October 31 at LA Comic Con, stating he is "currently a little bit homeless" following severe coastal erosion in September that swallowed his driveway and spread toward the four-level property's front door.
Sinkhole expands, triggers evacuation
The sinkhole, initially about 30 square feet, has grown significantly, consuming a fence, construction ladders and portable toilets. Broken water and gas lines forced the Southern California Gas Company to cut supply to the area, and the City of Malibu declared a local emergency on September 8, issuing evacuation orders for affected properties on Sea Level Drive. Authorities warned conditions could worsen with high tides and rain from Hurricane Marie.
Emergency permits filed to save property
Cage, who purchased the home in 2024, has filed three permits with city officials to combat the damage. An emergency building permit allows sandbags to be placed against the beach and exterior for wave protection. Additional permits cover asphalt debris removal and excavation for soil samples ahead of shoring installation. The actor plans to take his four-year-old daughter, August, trick-or-treating in Santa Monica and watch "The Shining" afterward.
