Bijal Resort Brings Maldives-Inspired Luxury to Turkish Riviera

By Karim Hammam

The Turkish Riviera is emerging as a compelling alternative to the Maldives for autumn sun, offering similar luxury with a shorter flight from the UK. The region, centered around the ancient city of Side, combines 2,000-year-old history with new high-end resorts.

Ancient Infrastructure Still Functional

Side, founded in the seventh century BC, features a Roman forum, a theatre, and a restored Greek fountain. Local guide Ismet notes that the city's 2,000-year-old drainage system remains fully operational, having recently handled heavy rainfall without issue. Roman builders integrated pipes directly into walls, a technique that minimizes disruption during repairs.

Bijal Resort Redefines Coastal Luxury

Opened in spring 2025, Bijal Resort aims to bring Maldives-inspired luxury to the Turkish coastline. The resort is owned by the Gürok Group, which also operates the Joali and Joali Being resorts in the Maldives. Bijal offers 19 villas, each with a private pool, set within a tranquil compound a five-minute drive from Side. The property emphasizes serenity, with heated pools, a high-tech gym, and a beach club accessible by a short walk or cycle ride.

Creative Activities Encourage Disconnection

Guests can participate in art classes led by London-based painter and ceramicist Venetia Berry. Over three sessions, Berry teaches pottery and painting in a surreal style designed to be meditative and low-pressure. Staff report that many novice guests continue artistic pursuits after returning home. Additional amenities include table tennis, darts, and chess to reduce screen time.

Practical Details

The Turkish Riviera averages 320 days of sunshine annually, with autumn daytime temperatures around 27°C and warm seas. The flight from London takes approximately four hours. Rates at Bijal start from €850 (£709) per night for a one-bedroom villa on a bed-and-breakfast basis for two guests.
