European cities are gearing up for the 2026 festive season with Christmas markets that combine traditional food, handcrafted gifts, and seasonal atmosphere. From historic squares to palace grounds, these ten markets stand out for their authenticity and charm.
Budapest, Hungary
Budapest kicks off the season early, with stalls opening in Vörösmarty Square from 13 November 2026 until 1 January 2027. The market near St Stephen’s Basilica adds ice skating and Hungarian folk crafts, focusing on authentic handicrafts over commercial gifts.
Zagreb, Croatia
Zagreb hosts at least a dozen markets across parks, squares, and tunnels from 28 November 2026 to 7 January 2027. Food stalls dominate, and visitors can skate through Ledeni Park’s winding rink or watch a live nativity scene outside Zagreb Cathedral.
Lille, France
Lille’s markets run from 19 November to 30 December 2026. Wooden chalets in Place Rihour sell toys, tartiflette, and chocolate-dripping waffles, while Grand-Place features a Ferris wheel and Friday evening performances by piano-playing tricyclists and illuminated stilt walkers.
Berlin, Germany
Berlin offers more than 80 markets, most opening by 23 November 2026. The historic Spandau market is the largest, while Gendarmenmarkt provides a classic experience and Alexanderplatz adds a medieval market, antique carousel, and roller-skating rink.
Vienna, Austria
Over a dozen markets appear in Vienna, with the Schönbrunn Palace market open from 6 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Highlights include the Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz, ice skating at Vienna Ice World, and traditional gifts at the Old Viennese Christmas Market on Freyung.
Bruges, Belgium
Bruges’ “Winter Glow” celebration runs from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The medieval city centre sparkles with fairy lights, craft and food stalls at the Markt, and additional pop-up bars at Simon Stevinplein, all reachable from the UK in under three and a half hours by train.
Copenhagen, Denmark
Tivoli Gardens transforms into a Christmas wonderland from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Beyond food and gift stalls, visitors can ice skate and, on 13 December, watch the Santa Lucia floating parade of light-decorated kayaks on the canals.
Basel, Switzerland
Basel’s market sets up 155 stalls from Münsterplatz to Barfüsserplatz from 26 November to 23 December 2026. The focus is on cheesy snacks like raclette and sausages, with extra food stalls at Claraplatz and hand-painted baubles available at the Kulpa Weihnachtskugeln stall.
Strasbourg, France
France’s oldest and largest Christmas market operates from 27 November to 24 December 2026. Around 100 stalls fill Place Broglie, while Place du Marché-aux-Poissons offers Alsatian delicacies. The OFF Market adds a socially responsible twist with secondhand and Fairtrade products.
Birmingham, England
The Frankfurt Christmas Market takes over Victoria Square from 5 November to 24 December 2026, billed as the biggest German market outside Germany and Austria. It serves bratwurst, glühwein, and schnitzel, while Cathedral Square hosts a separate market with 50 traders until mid-December.
