Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, 30, has died after suffering a serious injury in a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during a Spanish second-division match on Monday. The incident occurred in the seventh minute of stoppage time with the score 2-2. Owono was sent off and the match was abandoned. De Miguel was taken by ambulance to hospital but later died.
Teammate defends Owono
Andorra centre-back Lautaro Spatz said on social media that Owono was devastated and would never intentionally hurt anyone. Spatz described Owono as deeply affected by the incident and emphasized that unfortunate incidents can happen in football but no one could imagine such tragic consequences.
Football world mourns
A minute's silence was held at all European games this week in tribute to De Miguel, a father of one who joined Tenerife in summer 2025 on a three-year deal. The Equatoguinean Football Federation said Owono, who has made 47 international appearances for Equatorial Guinea, was going through profound sorrow and grief.
Investigation and mourning period
Spanish police opened a routine investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter, as any non-natural death automatically triggers a judicial inquiry under Spanish law. Owono deactivated his Instagram account, which had over 30,000 followers. Tenerife announced six official days of mourning with all club activities suspended.
Funeral arrangements
Mourners laid flowers and lit candles at Tenerife's Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez. The club's players, staff and officials will attend De Miguel's funeral in Navahermosa, Toledo. The stadium will open on Saturday evening for supporters to bid farewell. De Miguel's family thanked everyone for support and asked for privacy.
