Pierce Brosnan has weighed in on the debate over the next James Bond, expressing particular support for Callum Turner among the reported frontrunners for the role.

Reported frontrunners

Josh O’Connor, Jack Lowden and Callum Turner are reportedly the leading candidates to succeed Daniel Craig as 007. Brosnan, who played the British spy in four films from 1995’s “GoldenEye” to 2002’s “Die Another Day,” shared his thoughts in a new interview with Vanity Fair.

Brosnan backs Turner

While praising all the contenders, Brosnan singled out Turner, with whom he played father and son in the 2017 drama “The Only Living Boy in New York.” “Callum Turner is someone I’ve worked with, and he’s so strong,” Brosnan said. “They all have a voice and a physique, and a presence on film. They all have longevity as actors.”

Praise for director Denis Villeneuve

Brosnan also lauded incoming Bond director Denis Villeneuve, calling him “iconoclastic” and “visionary.” He added: “His stealth and imagination of camera work and storytelling is so visceral and sensuous. It’s going to be truly magnificent.”

Older Bond possibility

Brosnan has previously said he would not rule out returning as an older Bond. Referring to author Richard Osman’s suggestion that he play a septuagenarian version of the spy, Brosnan said: “It’s very possible. They know where to find me.”
