Josh O'Connor has responded to speculation that he is in contention to play the next James Bond, calling the rumors flattering but declining to confirm or deny them.
O'Connor's Response at Cheltenham Event
The 36-year-old actor, known for "Disclosure Day," was asked about the reports while opening a new Everyman Theatre in his hometown of Cheltenham, England. He said being considered in the same bracket was extraordinary and described reading the reports as an "incredibly bizarre pinch me moment." However, he added there was nothing more to say.
Lowden Also Comments on Speculation
Fellow actor Jack Lowden, also rumored to be in the running, addressed the speculation in a recent GQ interview. Lowden called the rumors flattering but said he would not add to the noise. His "Slow Horses" co-star Gary Oldman had previously claimed the role had been cast and expressed hope Lowden would get it.
Casting Director on Bond's Enigma
Retired casting director Debbie McWilliams, who helped cast previous Bonds, emphasized the importance of maintaining the character's enigma. She said the audience must believe the actor can kill, and knowing too much about the actor personally undermines that.
Future of the Franchise
Actor Ben Whishaw, who played Q, suggested the franchise needs complete reinvention. The next Bond film will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, following Daniel Craig's final outing in "No Time to Die" (2021). Amazon acquired MGM Studios in January 2025, taking control of the series.
