Corporate America is preparing for a potential shift in Washington’s balance of power as US midterm election results approach. Analysts say a strong Democratic showing could boost clean energy, housing and healthcare stocks, while artificial intelligence, data center and defense firms may face greater legislative scrutiny.
Prediction markets and polling
Polymarket puts the odds of a Democratic sweep at 72%, with Republicans keeping the Senate alongside a Democratic House at 23%. A Reuters/Ipsos poll shows President Donald Trump’s approval ratings at a career low over living costs and the Iran conflict.
Potential beneficiaries of a Democratic wave
Clean energy companies such as First Solar, Sunrun, Enphase Energy and NextEra Energy could benefit if federal support for renewable energy remains in place. The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act devoted hundreds of billions to climate measures. Homebuilders may see affordability measures if Democrats take both chambers, though any legislation would face a presidential veto.
Sectors at risk from increased scrutiny
AI and data center stocks, including Micron Technology, Seagate and semiconductor equipment makers, could face subpoenas and state-level restrictions on data center development. Defense contractors such as RTX and Northrop Grumman may see military spending scrutinized, though demand from the Iran conflict remains robust. Healthcare insurers could face pressure over Medicaid and Medicare Advantage plans, while financial regulatory easing might slow. Cryptocurrency legislation could stall under a Democratic Senate, and investigations into crypto firms tied to Trump may create legal risks.
