Eric Dane's Final Days: Actor Was 'In Control' of Death, Wife Says

By Ahmed Abdelsalam

Grey's Anatomy and Euphoria star Eric Dane died in February at age 53 after battling ALS, a degenerative neurological disorder. His wife, Rebecca Gayheart, 55, revealed that Dane was fully aware he was dying and made deliberate choices about how to leave.

Family Unprepared for Final Hospital Visit

Gayheart told Today that the family had grown accustomed to Dane's frequent hospital trips, where he would recover and return home. She and their daughters, Billie, 16, and Georgia, 14, did not anticipate his final admission would be his last. "I had no idea that that was it, that that week was going to be our last week," Gayheart said.

Actor Remained Communicative Until the End

By the third day in the hospital, the tone of doctors' conversations shifted, and Dane knew he was dying. Though his verbal communication was limited, Gayheart said she, the children, and close friends could understand him. "He was figuring it out as we went," she recalled. "I remember the moment Eric decided to make some choices, and he did ... he was in control of the way he was going to leave."

Family Vigil in Hospital Room

The actor's daughters and Gayheart "camped out" in his room, bringing battery-operated candles and playing his favorite music to make the environment as comfortable as possible. Gayheart, who had filed for divorce in 2018 but requested its dismissal in March 2025 amid his health crisis, described the final days as a blur. "He was becoming more alive mentally, but losing all of his physical abilities," she said. "For the girls, that was really hard to watch."
