Major cinema chains Cinemark and Regal have decided not to screen Brad Pitt's upcoming film "The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth" following a disagreement with Netflix over the theatrical release window. The Netflix-backed movie, directed by David Fincher from a script by Quentin Tarantino, is scheduled for a limited theatrical run starting November 25 before streaming on Netflix December 23.
Release Window Dispute
Cinemark CEO Sean Gamble explained during an earnings call that the proposed release model is not constructive for the broader theatrical ecosystem. He stated the chain evaluates each film on a case-by-case basis and considers long-term industry dynamics. Regal has similarly declined to book the film for the same reason.
Cinemark CEO Comments
Gamble emphasized that the decision reflects a strategic view of how short release windows could affect future industry dynamics. He said the proposed model is not aligned with the greatest interest of their theaters. Netflix has not yet commented publicly on the chains' decision.
Fan Reaction to Trailer
The recently released trailer drew criticism from viewers who complained about dark, murky visual quality. Many fans on social media questioned the cinematography choices, with some suggesting the footage appears overly tinted and difficult to see.
Tarantino Novelization
Alongside the film, Quentin Tarantino will publish a novelization titled "The Adventures of Cliff Booth" through HarperCollins. Tarantino's previous novelization of "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" definitively resolved an ambiguity from the original film regarding Cliff Booth's wife.
