Giro d'Italia 2027 Route Unveiled with Iconic Climbs

By Islam El-Sakka

The route for the 2027 Giro d’Italia has been unveiled in Rome, featuring a trio of legendary climbs — the Mortirolo, Gavia and Zoncolan — in the same edition for the first time. The 110th edition runs from 8 May to 30 May, covering 3,418 kilometres and 50,250 metres of climbing across 21 stages.

Route highlights

The race starts in Trieste with a brief crossing into Slovenia before heading south to Naples for a sprint finish. The decisive final week in the Alps and Dolomites includes two individual time trials totalling 56.9 kilometres: a mountainous test to Campo di Giove and a flat specialist course on the Monza motor racing circuit.

Key mountain stages

Stage 16 serves as the queen stage, returning the 2,600-metre Passo Gavia for the first time since 2014. The stage packs 192 kilometres and 5,700 metres of elevation gain, sandwiching the Gavia between two ascents of the Mortirolo on the way to the finish in Aprica. Stage 18 adds another 4,450 metres of climbing, while the penultimate stage 20 tackles Monte Zoncolan with 3,600 metres of climbing in the final 50 kilometres.

Contender outlook

The parcours is expected to suit strong climbers and time-trialists such as Remco Evenepoel and Paul Seixas. Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard is widely expected to skip the race, while 2024 winner Tadej Pogacar is likely to target the Tour de France and Vuelta a España double instead.

Women’s race also revealed

The 2027 Giro d’Italia Women will run from 29 May to 6 June over 1,132 kilometres and 17,450 metres of climbing, 5,000 metres more than this year. The nine-stage route culminates in a mountainous time trial and a queen stage around Mont Blanc with 4,000 metres of climbing over four classified ascents. Defending champion Demi Vollering of FDJ United-Suez is among the favourites.
