Andrew Scott's film "Elsinore" has topped the nominations for the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) with 12 shortlist inclusions. Directed by Simon Stone, the feature portrays actor Ian Charleson during the final months of his life as he prepared to play Hamlet at the National Theatre while gravely ill with AIDS. The production recently premiered as the Opening Night Gala at the BFI London Film Festival.

Elsinore dominates nominations

The film earned nods for best British independent film, best director for Stone, best screenplay, lead performance for Scott, and supporting actor for Billie Piper. It also secured nominations across technical categories including casting, cinematography, costume design, editing, make-up and hair design, original music, and production design.

Other leading contenders

Cleo Barnard's "I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning" followed with eight nominations, including best British independent film, director, and screenplay. Ashley Walters' directorial debut "Animol" earned seven nominations; the film stars Tut Nyuot, Vladyslav Baliuk, Stephen Graham, and Sharon Duncan-Brewster in a story set inside a young offender institution. Welsh-language films "Effi O Blaenau" and "Queen At Sea" each received six nominations, while Mike Leigh's "Tender Loving Care" — described as likely his last film — garnered four, including best director.

Acting categories announced

Lead performance nominees include Juliette Binoche for "Queen At Sea", Erin Doherty for "Faith", Leisa Gwenllian for "Effi O Blaenau", Jonathan Jules for "Florid", and Tut Nyuot for "Animol". Supporting performance contenders alongside Piper are Claire Foy for "Ink", Anna Calder-Marshall and Tom Courtenay for "Queen At Sea", Sekou Diaby for "Animol", and Bill Pullman for "Everybody Digs Bill Evans". The remaining best director nominees are Andrew Haigh for "A Long Winter" and Mark Jenkin for "Rose Of Nevada".

Documentary and ceremony schedule

Best feature documentary nominees are "All Rivers Spill Their Stories To The Sea", "Everybody To Kenmure Street", "One In A Million", "Something Familiar", and "We, The Hated". Winners will be revealed in two stages: craft category winners will be published on BIFA's social media channels on November 24, while all other awards will be presented at the ceremony on December 6 at London's Roundhouse.
