Josh O'Connor Addresses James Bond Casting Rumors

By Basant El-Faramawy

Josh O'Connor has responded to speculation that he is in contention to become the next James Bond, calling the rumors flattering but declining to confirm or deny them.

O'Connor's Comments at Theatre Opening

The 36-year-old actor, known for "Disclosure Day," was asked about the reports while opening a new Everyman Theatre in his hometown of Cheltenham, England, on Tuesday. He said being considered for the role was "extraordinary" and described reading the reports as "an incredibly bizarre pinch me moment," but added there was nothing further to say.

Other Contenders and Industry Reaction

Other actors reportedly in the running include Jack Lowden, Callum Turner, and an unnamed fourth candidate. Lowden, star of "Slow Horses," also addressed the rumors in a recent GQ interview, calling them flattering but refusing to add to the speculation. His co-star Gary Oldman had previously suggested the role had already been cast and expressed hope Lowden would get it.

Casting Philosophy and Franchise Changes

Retired casting director Debbie McWilliams, who helped select Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig, emphasized the importance of maintaining Bond's enigma. Meanwhile, Ben Whishaw, who played Q in the Craig era, said the franchise needs complete reinvention.

Next Film and Ownership

The next Bond film will be directed by Denis Villeneuve and follows Daniel Craig's final appearance in "No Time to Die" (2021). Amazon acquired MGM Studios, the franchise's longtime backer, in January 2025, taking control of the series.
