Andrew Scott's 'Elsinore' Leads British Independent Film Award Nominations

By Fatma Younis

Andrew Scott's drama "Elsinore" has emerged as the frontrunner for the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) with 12 nominations, including best British independent film, best director for Simon Stone, and best lead performance for Scott. The film, in which Scott portrays actor Ian Charleson during his final months before dying of AIDS in 1990, premiered to rave reviews at the Telluride Film Festival in September.

Strong Competition from Other Films

Clio Barnard's Birmingham-set ensemble drama "I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning" follows with eight nominations, including best British independent film, best director for Barnard, and best ensemble performance. Ashley Walters' directorial debut "Animol" received seven nominations, among them best lead performance for Tut Nyuot and best debut director for Walters. Mike Leigh's final film, "Tender Loving Care," garnered four nominations.

Non-Gendered Acting Categories

The BIFAs distinguish themselves with non-gendered acting categories. Scott and Nyuot will compete against performers such as Juliette Binoche for "Queen at Sea" and Leisa Gwenllian for the Welsh-language adaptation "Effi o Blaenau."

Cinema of the Year Award

The awards also feature a cinema of the year category, won in 2025 by the Magic Lantern Cinema in Tywyn, Wales. This year's contenders include Campus West in Welwyn Garden City, the Hippodrome in Bo'ness, and the Ultimate Picture Palace in Oxford, which faces potential closure.

Ceremony Details

Winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Roundhouse in London on 6 December.
