Devon's water supply remains in crisis despite recent rainfall from Storm Austen and Storm Boelo, with parts of the county still experiencing severe drought after the UK's hottest and driest summer on record. Reservoirs are at critically low levels, and a hosepipe ban remains in force. Authorities warn that if conditions worsen, some homes could temporarily lose piped water, which would particularly affect vulnerable residents who rely on water for medical or personal care.
Hosepipe Ban Remains in Place
Devon County Council has urged residents and businesses to reduce water consumption to protect supplies. The council stated that further sustained rain is needed for recovery, and heavy rain in one area does not guarantee that drinking water sources have replenished. South West Water echoed this appeal across parts of Cornwall and Devon.
Council Urges Conservation Steps
The council has asked locals to take shorter showers, turn off taps while brushing teeth, run washing machines and dishwashers only with full loads, skip pre-rinse cycles, and arrange repairs for dripping taps or leaking toilets. These measures aim to reduce avoidable water use and help preserve supplies over the coming weeks.
Support for Vulnerable Households
Additional support is being provided through the free Priority Services Register organized by utility companies. Residents who need extra water due to medical conditions, disabilities, or caring responsibilities should continue using the amount they need. The council emphasized that drinking, hygiene, and essential care must remain a priority.
Council Leader Calls for Community Action
Council leader Julian Brazil said Devonians always pull together in times of crisis. He urged locals to consider how vital water is for elderly people and those with limited mobility, noting that cutting personal water use now can help avoid restrictions that would impact lives and businesses. He also encouraged people to help vulnerable neighbors apply for the Priority Services Register.
