Nicolas Cage 'a little bit homeless' after Malibu mansion sinkhole

Actor Nicolas Cage has revealed he is "currently a little bit homeless" after a massive sinkhole caused extensive damage to his $10.5 million oceanfront mansion in Malibu, California.

Sinkhole triggers emergency

The sinkhole appeared in September when severe coastal erosion, driven by high surf from Hurricane Marie, swallowed the property's driveway and spread toward the front door of the four‑storey home. The collapse broke water and gas lines, prompting the Southern California Gas Company to cut supply to the area. Malibu officials declared a local emergency on September 8 and issued evacuation orders for affected properties on Sea Level Drive, with a temporary shelter set up at Malibu High School.

Cage's living situation

Speaking at LA Comic Con on October 31, the 62‑year‑old actor said he has been staying in hotels since the damage occurred. He added that he would still take his four‑year‑old daughter, August, trick‑or‑treating in Santa Monica and watch Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" afterward.

Efforts to save the property

Cage, who purchased the home in 2024, is fighting to preserve the structure. He has filed three emergency permits with city officials, including permission to place sandbags for wave protection, remove asphalt debris from the sinkhole, and conduct soil sampling for shoring installation. The sinkhole has grown significantly from its original 30‑square‑foot area, consuming a fence, ladders and portable toilets used by construction crews.
