Canelo Alvarez secured a crucial unanimous decision over Christian Mbilli on Saturday in Riyadh, capturing the WBC super-middleweight title 13 months after his loss to Terence Crawford. The Mexican star earned scorecards of 115-112, 116-111, and 117-110, with Mbilli docked a point in round eight for a low blow.
Canelo outpoints Mbilli to reclaim title
Alvarez, 36, was more active than in recent fights, matching the volume punching of Mbilli, 31, and landing hard right hooks early before mixing in uppercuts in the later rounds. The victory restores Canelo as a world champion at super-middleweight after he lost undisputed status to Crawford last year. Crawford subsequently retired in December, prompting the upgrade of Mbilli's interim WBC belt to full champion status.
Emotional victory after Crawford loss
"It's so difficult to explain [my emotions]. It's something unbelievable," Alvarez said after the fight at ANB Arena. "This feels like my first title, now after 21 years as a professional; 16 years ago I won my first title, now I won the title again. I'm so proud, so proud of my team." He added that nothing surprised him about Mbilli's performance, stating he executed his game plan perfectly.
Event proceeds despite Riyadh attacks
The bout went ahead despite recent Houthi missile strikes on the Saudi capital that have injured hundreds and killed more than 20 people, according to local authorities. The ANB Arena hosted the fight without disruption.
