Manchester City suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Brighton on Saturday, marking their second consecutive Premier League loss and ending Enzo Maresca's flawless start as manager. The Italian had won his first seven league games in charge but now faces growing scrutiny after back-to-back setbacks, including last week's loss at Aston Villa.
Defensive Errors Prove Costly
City have conceded 10 goals in nine league matches this season, double the tally of title rivals Arsenal. Individual mistakes have piled up: goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and defender Marc Guehi were at fault at Villa Park, while Matheus Nunes was culpable against Brighton. The team has kept only one clean sheet in its last eight games across all competitions, and Maresca admitted the errors are a concern.
Midfield Rebuild Still Searching for Balance
A £325 million summer overhaul brought in Enzo Fernandez for a joint-Premier League record £125 million, Elliot Anderson for £116 million, and teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi for £86 million. Maresca started all three new midfielders against Brighton, leaving Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden on the bench, but the combination failed to control the game as City struggled to create clear chances.
Attack Lacks Clinical Edge
Despite firing 21 shots — the most at home without scoring since November 2024 — City managed just one goal in their last two league outings despite nine big chances. Erling Haaland was starved of service, and Iliman Ndiaye missed the best opportunities. Maresca noted his side remains the second-highest scorers in the league but stressed the need to avoid "silly goals."
Champions League Test Awaits
City travel to RB Leipzig on Wednesday aiming to return to winning ways in the Champions League. With Arsenal poised to overtake them at the top of the Premier League if they beat Liverpool on Sunday, Maresca must quickly find solutions across the pitch.
