Brazilian senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, has fled to Miami following his defeat in the presidential runoff against incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, mirroring his father's escape to Florida after the 2022 election.
Election defeat and flight
Lula won the October 2026 runoff by more than four million votes, maintaining his perfect electoral record against the Bolsonaro family. Flavio Bolsonaro, 45, refused to concede, claiming an electoral coup orchestrated by Brazil's Supreme Court. Defying a court order to surrender his passport amid a corruption investigation, he left Brazil with his wife and two daughters, crossing into Argentina's Puerto Iguazu.
Trump and allies' support
Argentine President Javier Milei, a Trump ally, facilitated the family's transit, escorting them to a private jet that stopped in Ecuador before landing in Miami. U.S. President Donald Trump said he "approves" of Bolsonaro's arrival, calling the election a "disgrace" and the Bolsonaros "fine people." The Wall Street Journal reported the charter jet was arranged by the Trump administration.
Legal troubles and corruption probe
Flavio Bolsonaro faces a Supreme Court investigation into alleged money laundering and corruption linked to his financial ties to lawyer Willer Tomaz and funding for a biographical film about his father. The probe, opened in July by Justice Andre Mendonca, prompted the passport surrender order that preceded his departure. He now plans to lead a political operation in exile from the United States.
Parallels to father's 2022 exit
The episode echoes Jair Bolsonaro's flight to Florida days before Lula's 2023 inauguration, after which the former president was convicted of attempted coup d'état and sentenced to 27 years in prison. Jair Bolsonaro remains under house arrest, barred from office until 2030. Analysts describe the younger Bolsonaro as a more moderate figure but note his refusal to accept electoral defeat follows the same playbook as his father and Trump.
