Support for the United Kingdom rejoining the European Union has increased following comments by Andy Burnham, according to a new Ipsos Mori poll.
Poll details
The survey found that 56 per cent of respondents would vote to rejoin the EU, up four points from a similar poll in May. Opposition to rejoining fell three points to 30 per cent. Among those likely to vote in a future referendum, the split was 63 per cent in favour and 34 per cent against.
Demographic breakdown
Support was highest among younger voters, with 73 per cent of those under 35 favouring rejoining. Among 2024 Labour voters, 77 per cent backed a return, while 31 per cent of Conservative voters and 16 per cent of Reform UK voters agreed. A majority also believed rejoining would improve the economy (54 per cent) and national security (53 per cent), though 39 per cent thought it would harm Britain’s ability to act in its own interests.
Political reaction
Former Conservative minister Nick Boles said the poll showed Burnham “speaks for a majority” in arguing that Brexit has been bad for Britain. Former Labour leader Neil Kinnock said the strong support among under‑35s signalled “continually growing support” that would expand in coming decades.
