A senior commander of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces has defected, leveling accusations of nepotism against the paramilitary group's leadership. The defection marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict that has ravaged Sudan since April 2023.
Commander Cites Favoritism in Ranks
The defecting officer alleged that promotions and key positions within the RSF are awarded based on personal connections rather than merit. He said the leadership's reliance on kinship and loyalty networks has undermined the group's operational effectiveness and morale.
Impact on Sudan Conflict
Analysts suggest the defection could encourage further dissent within RSF ranks. The paramilitary force has been locked in a power struggle with the Sudanese Armed Forces, a war that has displaced millions and created one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
Humanitarian Situation Worsens
International agencies continue to warn of catastrophic hunger and disease outbreaks across Sudan. The United Nations has appealed for increased funding to address the needs of more than 25 million people requiring humanitarian assistance.
