MV Odyssey Cruise Ends Abruptly as Fuel Costs Soar

By Islam El-Sakka

The MV Odyssey, a residential cruise ship operated by Villa Vie Residences, abruptly ended its round-the-world voyage this week, leaving more than 200 passengers stranded in Cambodia after soaring fuel costs made the operation unsustainable.

Fuel Costs Spike After Iran War

Following the outbreak of war in Iran in late February 2026, monthly fuel costs per cabin jumped from $1,800 to as high as $8,000. Villa Vie Residences said the increase placed the company under “unsustainable financial pressure” despite efforts to reduce consumption by slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port.

Passengers Given Hours to Disembark

On Tuesday, passengers were given seven hours to pack and disembark at Sihanoukville port. Many described shock and grief; some had lived aboard for two years. The company offered a charter flight to the U.S. but provided no immediate financial aid or hotel list.

Financial Distress Evident for Weeks

Passengers said financial distress had been apparent for weeks. In August, while docked in Singapore, residents contributed their own funds to keep the ship moving. Food quality declined and shore excursions were cut as the company conserved cash.

Residential Cruises Remain a Precarious Niche

Analyst Prof Andrew Coggins noted residential ships are a tiny, financially precarious niche. He cited the 2023 cancellation of a similar three-year cruise by Miray Cruises. The World remains the only purpose-built residential ship, with far larger cabins and higher prices.

Founder Blames War, Vows to Help

Villa Vie founder Mikael Petterson acknowledged responsibility but blamed the Iran war, saying the venture would have survived otherwise. The company says it is evaluating restructuring and recapitalisation options over the next 60 days.

Passengers Philosophical Despite Loss

Despite the ordeal, passengers like Kit and Randy Cassingham remain philosophical. “Live life while you can because you don’t know how the adventure will turn out,” Kit said, adding they do not view themselves as victims.
