Election analyst Nate Silver has significantly raised his forecast for Democratic chances in the upcoming midterm elections, now giving the party a 79 percent probability of winning control of the Senate, up from a previous estimate of 75 percent.
Senate Outlook Improves for Democrats
Silver announced the revised figure on The Argument YouTube show, citing “very strong polls for Democrats in individual Senate races over the past couple of days.” He noted that while polls can be wrong, the data has moved past the point where the Senate can be described as too close to call. However, Silver cautioned on his Substack that Democratic leads in key battleground states — including Texas, Ohio, Alaska, and Maine — remain within a normal polling error of flipping.
House Also Favored for Democrats
Silver added that Democrats “remain strong favorites” to retake the House of Representatives. CNN’s Harry Enten, a pollster favored by President Donald Trump, separately projected Democrats could win 223 seats, surpassing the 218 needed for a majority.
Trump’s Standing and Republican Anxiety
Next week’s elections are widely viewed as a referendum on the Trump administration after nearly two years in power. The president’s approval ratings have fallen to historic lows amid an unpopular war in Iran and persistent cost-of-living concerns. Republican strategists described the party’s position as worse than expected earlier this year, with some members already expressing resignation about losing their congressional majorities.
Early Voting and Potential Consequences
Approximately 40 million Americans have already cast ballots. If Democrats capture both chambers, Trump would be rendered a lame duck, unable to advance his legislative agenda and facing investigations from an emboldened Democratic Congress. The president has dismissed unfavorable polling as “fake.”
