$2 Trillion Wiped Off Tech Stocks Amid AI Spending Fears

By Basant El-Faramawy

The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 is on track to erase more than $2 trillion in market value this month as Big Tech earnings intensify investor scrutiny over whether massive investments in artificial intelligence can yield returns quickly enough. The index has dropped over 5.8% in October, a wipeout that slightly exceeds the total valuation of SpaceX, as the AI trade hits turbulence.

Big Tech Earnings Intensify Scrutiny

Hyperscalers Meta Platforms, Alphabet, and Amazon.com have raised capital expenditure forecasts to accelerate AI infrastructure expansion, unnerving investors as rising borrowing costs make debt-financed investments more expensive. Alphabet suffered its largest single-day percentage decline on record after disappointing search advertising results and a significant acceleration in cash burn. Meta's plan for a record $97.5 billion fundraise heightened concerns about shareholder dilution. Microsoft and SpaceX bucked the trend, posting results showing AI investments are beginning to pay off.

Credit Markets Reflect Anxiety

Microsoft is reportedly planning a $25 billion investment-grade bond sale, its first in over nine years, while Meta, Amazon, and Alphabet have issued hundreds of billions in corporate bonds over the past four years. Morgan Stanley projects total AI infrastructure capex will cross $1 trillion next year. The growing reliance on debt capital is surfacing as a fresh risk, challenging the assumption that AI leaders are shielded from macroeconomic pressures. Investors are pricing in the risk that elevated financing costs and delayed returns could strain corporate balance sheets.

Revenue Resilience Amid Historic Spending

Revenue across the "Magnificent Seven" has remained resilient since ChatGPT's launch in 2022, demonstrating strong demand. Amazon Web Services continued to accelerate, Meta posted higher-than-expected revenue growth, and Microsoft projected strong cloud expansion. However, capital expenditure has reached historic levels. J.P. Morgan forecasts global AI capex will reach $5.5 trillion by 2030, with $900 billion spent in 2026 alone. Combined AI spend this year by Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Oracle, and Microsoft will likely equal their cumulative investment since November 2022.
