Swedish climate academic Andreas Malm has condemned a UK government travel ban as a “drift into authoritarianism” after his electronic travel authorisation was revoked ahead of a planned speaking appearance in London.
Malm Condemns Ban as Authoritarian Drift
Malm, author of “How to Blow Up a Pipeline,” said he was kept in the dark about the reasons for the ban, only informed that his presence was “not considered to be conducive to the public good.” He believes the decision stems from his scheduled panel appearance alongside Huda Ammori, a co-founder of the proscribed group Palestine Action.
Home Office Cites Public Good Risk
The Home Office declined to discuss the individual case but a source said decisions to cancel an ETA are based on an assessment of potential risk to UK society. Malm said he has requested clarification without response.
Political Figures Criticize Decision
The ban drew criticism from author Sally Rooney, Green Party leader Zack Polanski, and Labour MP Clive Lewis, who warned that barring academics for political views resembles political censorship dressed as public safety.
Malm's Background and Views
Malm has long campaigned for Palestinian rights and previously described the Hamas attacks on 7 October 2023 as an “act of liberation.” He denied supporting or financing Palestine Action, stating his only link to the group is sharing a stage with Ammori to discuss the war in Iran.
