Poll Shows Surge in Voters Backing Labour to Win Next Election

By Fatma Younis

A new poll shows the number of voters who think Labour will win the next election has nearly doubled in a year, providing a boost to Andy Burnham after his first 100 days as leader.

Poll Details

More in Common survey found 42% of the public think Labour will be victorious, up from 23% last summer. The proportion expecting a Labour loss fell from 58% to 33%. Even among Reform UK voters, 26% now believe Labour will win, up from 11%.

Expert Analysis

Louis O'Geran of More in Common said the shift shows how Burnham has changed perceptions of the Labour government. Polling expert Robert Hayward attributed the change to the demise of Keir Starmer as prime minister and a positive view among Labour voters toward Burnham.

Voter Breakdown

The poll found 72% of Labour's 2024 voters think the party will win, along with 54% of Liberal Democrat voters and 39% of Conservative voters. Labour has overtaken Reform in some surveys, placing third behind the Conservatives.

EU Rejoining Proposal

Burnham's suggestion of rejoining the EU is viewed positively by 45% of Britons versus 27% negative, rising to 71% among 2024 Labour voters.

Election Speculation

Labour MP Diane Abbott urged an early election if the Budget goes well, but Burnham ruled out a general election in the next 12 months, saying he is focused on people rather than party prospects.

The survey questioned 3,286 adults between 23 and 26 October.
