Driver Convicted of Murdering Teacher Dragged Under Car

By Basant El-Faramawy

A man has been found guilty of murdering a head teacher who was dragged for more than a mile while trapped beneath a car in Greater Manchester.

Crash and pursuit

Simon Richardson, 35, struck 56-year-old Michael Mullins as he cycled home from work on the evening of 20 April in the village of Warburton. Prosecutors said Richardson fled the crash scene, briefly stopped in an attempt to dislodge the injured but still-living cyclist, then drove on with Mr Mullins lodged underneath the vehicle.

Verdict and sentencing

A jury at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court convicted Richardson of murder and dangerous driving. Shouts of “Yes!” and tears were heard in the public gallery as the verdict was delivered. The judge, Mrs Justice Brunner, told Richardson that life imprisonment is the only sentence for murder and thanked the jurors for their service. Sentencing is scheduled for Monday.
