Asian equity markets mostly trended lower on Monday, following a decline on Wall Street. The downturn occurred as investors prepared for a significant week ahead, featuring major corporate earnings reports and critical central bank decisions that could impact market stability.
Global Markets and Oil Prices Slump
In Asia, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 slipped 0.1% to 62,602.86, while Seoul's Kospi dropped 1.1% to 5,494.29. The Shanghai Composite index lost 0.4% to 3,673.83, and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.2% to 8,782.30. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng managed a slight increase of 0.2% to 23,137.93.
Oil prices saw a significant drop following a period of sharp increases. Brent crude fell 1.3% to $110.23 a barrel, while the U.S. benchmark crude sank 1.7% to $101.52 a barrel. This follows a recent surge where Brent reached its highest level in over four years.
Tech Sector Focus and Economic Indicators
The technology sector remains under close scrutiny as investors seek evidence that massive investments in Artificial Intelligence will yield sustainable returns. While some AI-related companies like Micron Technology and Intel saw gains, broader market concerns persist regarding high interest rates and the costs of funding technological expansions. Major players including Alphabet, Microsoft, and Amazon are scheduled to report financial results this week.
Economic uncertainty is also being driven by inflation concerns. In the United States, inflation remains above the 2% target, with the upcoming Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) index expected to show a 3.7% rise for September. Additionally, geopolitical tensions involving the U.S. and Iran have impacted global oil supplies, contributing to rising energy costs.
